What is NVSUA?
The Northern Virginia Softball Umpires Association is a group of men and women softball umpires who officiate area high school, and USA Softball fastpitch softball.
Who can join?
Any person of good character who displays a mature demeanor, and expresses a desire to join and participate, shall be considered eligible to apply for membership with the Association.
Is there an age Limit?
Requirements for youth umpires are similar to the adult umpires. Umpires as young as 14 years old have proven to be successful umpires.
When does the NVSUA training begin?
Our Winter training begins on the first Saturday in February . Summer training begins near the end of August. See the “Training Opportunities” link for more informaton. From time-to-time, one-day clinics are held in various locations in the Northern Virginia area. Attendance at one of those clinics is required each year.
Do I need any prior experience?
Prior experience is not necessary! Our extensive training program will get you ready to umpire fast pitch softball.
I’ve never played baseball or softball. Can I still be an umpire?
Of course you can. As long as you’re willing to learn the rules of the game and can perform the tasks as outlined by the VHSL and USA Softball anyone can become an umpire.
What qualities or skills do I need to be a good umpire?
Any umpire must be fair, impartial, unbiased, professional, and competent in umpiring a contest. You should also be in and maintain proper physical and mental condition. Maintaining self-control under all conditions is also a valuable trait to have.
How long does training last?
Training of new umpires continues throughout the first year. Amount and level of games worked is based on each umpires competency and availability.
What are the meeting requirement for membership in NVSUA?
Six meetings are held annually in February, March, April, June, September and November. Additionally, our end of the year Awards Banquet is held on the first weekend of December annually.
I have prior experience as an umpire. Do I need to go through the training process?
The short answer is maybe! Transfers may be accepted into the association and will be evaluated for competency based on the requirements of the VHSL and/or USA Softball as outlined in the VHSL and/or USA Softball official handbook. Any additional training will be to update transfers on the techniques and procedures of the NVSUA.
How much is an official paid?
Game fees are determined by the contracts signed by the schools and programs as proposed by the NVSUA Board of Directors. Fees vary by level of competition and amounts increase based on level of difficulty. The amount an umpire can earn is determined by the number of games worked and the level of each game.
How much does it cost to get started?
Membership dues for NVSUA are $40 annually. (The annual fee is reduced for those under 18 years of age).
My work schedule varies and I often travel out of town. Can I still umpire?
Yes, you can still umpire based on your availability. All umpires are required to update their availability in the scheduling software. You may be assigned games if you have dates available in the software.
